I've had a Hackberry for 5 months now. I've run it with the built in Android system, and it's done a good job of displaying Netflix on my TV using WiFi, and side loading apps to my Kindle Fire.
I've also tried some of the various Linux versions available from the Miniand forums. I have one set up running a web server, a print server for my older pre-WiFi printer, and a storage server with an external harddrive (runs slow, but good enough for backups). I just have to change the SD card to run a different OS.
I've tried following the discussions on building my own Linux distro, but haven't actually tried that yet.
It's not a complete computer replacement, except for the graphics it is equivalent to a PC from about 8 - 10 years ago, but at this price you can try doing anything with it and not worry about the replacement cost.
